HCPC Biomedical Scientist Requirements: Everything You Need to Know

HCPC Standards of Proficiency
- Professional autonomy and accountability

IBMS Certificate of Competence
- Completion of the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio in an NHS (or equivalent) pathology laboratory
- Competency sign-off by a qualified HCPC-registered BMS assessor
- Coverage of all mandatory IBMS competency areas
- Submission to IBMS for formal assessment
Specialist BMS requirements
- Current HCPC registration as a BMS
- Minimum 2 years post-registration experience in the specialist area
- Completion of the specialist IBMS training portfolio
- Written examination in the specialist discipline
Overseas BMS registration
- Have qualifications assessed by IBMS for equivalency
- Demonstrate English language proficiency (IELTS or OET)
- May need to complete an adaptation period or aptitude test
- Meet all HCPC Standards of Proficiency regardless of country of training
