HCPC Biomedical Scientist Requirements: Everything You Need to Know

HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist is a legal requirement in the UK. This guide explains the education, competency and documentation requirements you must meet before applying.

HCPC Standards of Proficiency

  • Professional autonomy and accountability
  • Professional relationships
  • Analysis and judgement
  • Knowledge, understanding and skills across all pathology disciplines
  • Communication skills
  • Practice in the context of UK health and social care

IBMS Certificate of Competence

  • Completion of the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio in an NHS (or equivalent) pathology laboratory
  • Competency sign-off by a qualified HCPC-registered BMS assessor
  • Coverage of all mandatory IBMS competency areas
  • Submission to IBMS for formal assessment

Specialist BMS requirements

  • Current HCPC registration as a BMS
  • Minimum 2 years post-registration experience in the specialist area
  • Completion of the specialist IBMS training portfolio
  • Written examination in the specialist discipline

Overseas BMS registration

  • Have qualifications assessed by IBMS for equivalency
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency (IELTS or OET)
  • May need to complete an adaptation period or aptitude test
  • Meet all HCPC Standards of Proficiency regardless of country of training
