How to Apply for ASCP Certification: A Step-by-Step Guide

Applying for ASCP BOC certification for the first time can feel overwhelming. This guide walks through every step — from checking eligibility to scheduling your exam at a Pearson VUE centre.

⚠️ Important: MedLabPrep is an independent study platform not affiliated with ASCP BOC. Always verify current requirements, fees and deadlines directly at ascp.org/boc before applying.

Step 1 — Confirm your eligibility

Download the current Eligibility Requirements document from ascp.org/boc for your specific credential — requirements are updated periodically.

Step 2 — Create your ASCP account

  1. 1

    Go to ascp.org

Click BOC CertificationApply for Certification. You will need an ASCP account.

  2. 2

    Select your credential

Choose the exact credential you are applying for (e.g. MLS(ASCP), MLT(ASCP), BB(ASCP)) and the eligibility route that applies to you.

  3. 3

    Complete the application form

Fill in personal details, educational background and clinical experience. Most routes need official transcripts and programme director verification.

  4. 4

    Pay the application fee

Fees are listed on ascp.org/boc and vary by credential and member status. Payment is required before review.

  5. 5

    Submit supporting documents

Official transcripts must be sent directly from your institution. Some routes require employer verification of experience.

Step 3 — Wait for eligibility approval

ASCP BOC reviews your application and supporting documents. You will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter by email when approved.

💡 Tip: Do not schedule your exam until the ATT arrives. It contains your eligibility window — typically 90 days — within which you must sit the exam.

Step 4 — Schedule your exam

  1. 1

    Go to Pearson VUE

Visit pearsonvue.com/ascp-boc and log in or create an account.

  2. 2

    Find a test centre

Search by location. Pearson VUE has centres in all 50 US states and internationally for ASCPi candidates.

  3. 3

    Select your date and time

Book early — popular dates fill quickly around peak graduation season (May–July).

  4. 4

    Confirm your booking

Save the confirmation email; you need the confirmation number on exam day.

Exam day — what to bring

  • Two forms of valid government-issued ID (one with a photo)
  • Your Pearson VUE confirmation number
  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled time
  • No personal items in the testing room (lockers provided)
  • Scratch paper and pencil are provided by the centre

After the exam

Preliminary results are typically shown on screen immediately after you finish. Official results post to your ASCP account within a few days, and the certificate is mailed within several weeks.
